New partnership helps finance majors seeking CFP certification

Students who complete certain courses in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business can now save more than $2,500 in pursuit of credentials from the Certified Financial Planner™ Board.

The Department of Finance in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has partnered with the Certified Financial Planner™ Board to be an authorized educational provider for students pursuing CFP® certification.

The certification requires candidates to complete comprehensive education, pass a board exam, gain relevant experience, and meet ethical requirements. Elon University is now recognized as a qualifying educational institution which will allow students to take the exam sooner.

“Clients and employers trust those with a CFP® certification because of the high standards to achieve the certification,” said Vaishali Shah, a lecturer of finance who helped lead efforts to establish the partnership.

To satisfy the education requirement, students must complete:

  • FIN3430 Principles of Finance
  • FIN4130 Investments
  • FIN4190 Financial Planning
  • FIN4160 Fundamentals of Insurance (now including Estate and Philanthropic Planning)
  • ACC3410 Fundamentals of Income Taxation
  • FIN4670 Advanced Wealth Management (Capstone Class)

Courses will be in lieu of 18-24 months of that would typically cost a minimum of $2,500 for online instruction and more for in-person courses, saving students time and money.

“This is a big win because 20% of our finance majors want to pursue certification,” said Chris Harris, associate professor of finance and chair of the Department of Finance.
