Anjolina Fantaroni ’26 selected for SPJ’s MediaFest25 News Team

The Elon News Network executive director will be part of a handpicked team of student journalists covering the Society of Professional Journalists’ MediaFest25 in Washington, D.C.

Journalism major Anjolina Fantaroni ’26 has been selected for the SPJ News Team at MediaFest25, joining 10 student journalists and recent graduates who will deliver real-time coverage of the Society of Professional Journalists’ national convention in Washington, D.C., Oct. 15–18. Working alongside professional mentors, the team will produce stories, photos and multimedia packages highlighting the people and ideas shaping journalism today. This year’s student roster features representatives from Brigham Young University, Emerson College, George Washington University, Suffolk University, Texas State University, and Elon University, among others.

Fantaroni said she is eager to collaborate with peers and mentors in the nation’s capital and contribute to the team’s dynamic newsroom environment. “Everyone on the team is incredibly talented, and it’s been great getting to know them through our recent Zoom meetings. The energy is super positive, and you can tell we’re all genuinely excited to come together and create day-of coverage,” she said.

The executive director of Elon News Network (ENN) described the opportunity as an ideal blend of learning and leadership. “Covering MediaFest felt like a unique opportunity to learn from industry professionals and gain insight into the world of journalism,” she said. “I was drawn to the chance to connect with a network of peers and professionals from across the country. I knew that if selected, I could bring skills and fresh perspectives back to our newsroom at Elon News Network.”

Fantaroni’s newsroom experience already runs deep. At Elon, she has reported on significant local stories – including the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, flooding in Alamance County, and changes within the local school district – work that sharpened her multimedia production skills and deadline discipline.

“Elon News Network has been absolutely essential to my growth and opportunities over the past four years,” said the Southbridge, Massachusetts, native. “Through these experiences, I’ve developed a strong foundation in multimedia production and learned how to effectively lead a team.”

Her storytelling experience also extends beyond campus. During a summer 2025 internship at CBS 8 in San Diego, Fantaroni embraced the fast-paced, multiskilled environment of a metropolitan newsroom. “Watching multiskilled journalists gather their stories in the field, shoot their stand-ups on site, and quickly edit back at the station was inspiring. I’m excited to bring that same energy and fast-paced storytelling to the SPJ News Team,” she said.

Professor Anthony Hatcher, chair of the Department of Journalism, noted that Fantaroni’s growth since her early coursework has been “phenomenal.” He highlighted her persistence, curiosity and commitment to improvement – qualities she demonstrated publicly by posting practice news packages and final pieces from her summer internship, giving followers a glimpse into the hard work behind the scenes. Hatcher said her progress reflects both talent and tenacity, describing her as a student who “puts in the hours and isn’t afraid to ask for help.”

He added that Fantaroni’s initiative exemplifies the kind of ambition journalism needs. Hundreds of students across the country apply for SPJ News Team positions each year, but few secure a spot. “She went for it — and being chosen as one of just 10 reporters nationally recognizes her blossoming talent and dedication to the mission of informing the public responsibly,” Hatcher said.

Fantaroni is part of a larger Elon contingent traveling to MediaFest25 over fall break. Along with Fantaroni, Benjamin Berfield ’27, Miles Hayford ’27, Charlotte Pfabe ’27, Lilly Molina ’27, Fiona McAllister ’26 and Katrina Holtz ’28 will attend sessions, conduct interviews and return prepared to share takeaways with campus through a group presentation – amplifying the learning beyond the conference.
