Student Presentations in Online Modalities

Many instructors incorporate individual and group student presentations into their courses. These assignments offer students the opportunity to improve communication and professional skills, learn from one another and self-reflect on their learning in the course, among other advantages. Similar to lectures, student presentations can be delivered live using Zoom or Microsoft Teams or recorded using Kaltura for on-demand viewing in an online learning environment.

  • How might you take advantage of the online format to offer students options?
    • Synchronous or live presentations give students a chance to present in front of you and their peers as they would in class using tools like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Keep in mind that the presenter and attendees will need a stable, high-speed internet connection for this option to be viable.
    • Asynchronous or recorded presentations using tools like Kaltura help to avoid potential challenges that may occur during live presentations, including variations in time zones and internet capabilities, while also reducing stress for students who struggle with public speaking.
  • What guidelines do students need to keep in mind for success? Regardless of the modality you choose, it is helpful to provide guidelines for length, accompanying visuals, and other requirements. As described elsewhere, the challenges of disruptions can impact students’ attention and focus, making clear guidelines even more crucial.
  • If your course includes a peer review component, how will you communicate expectations for peer review and feedback to students?
