Celebrate the Jewish Holidays at Elon
Jewish students at Elon University have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays together, in a welcoming environment.
We come together as a community to enjoy meaningful services that have lots of student participation. This year, we are planning engaging services and meaningful activities that celebrate our traditions and create new ones. Our services are led by our Associate Chaplain for Jewish Life, Rabbi Dr. Maor Greene, alongside our students and our Jewish Educator, Boaz Avraham-Katz.
Our campus community gathers for the major Jewish Holidays, including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Hanukkah, Purim, Yom HaShoah, Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel Independence Day), and Passover.
HIGH HOLIDAYS
For Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we offer prayer services that represent the vibrant spectrum of Judaism on our campus, and Jewish students and community members at Elon observe and celebrate together.
STUDENTS: You MUST fill out the Religious Observance Form in advance if you are planning to miss class for any of the Jewish High Holidays. We strongly recommend that ALL Jewish students fill out the form, even if you are not sure you will be at the services or meals. CLICK HERE for the form, and please reach out to our Jewish Educator with any questions.
All Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur offerings are free of charge for students, and open to the entire community, but you must RSVP in advance to attend our delicious communal meals. Our 2024 High Holiday schedule will be posted soon
PASSOVER
“Thank you for making the Seder feel like a little piece of home,” a student wrote us after our Passover Seder. For Elon’s Jewish students, Elon Hillel provides a welcoming home filled with Jewish friends and holiday traditions, both familiar and new.
Jewish Life also offers a variety of engaging programs to prepare for the holiday, and during the week of Passover. Kosher-style meals and plenty of matza are available in the Lakeside dining hall, and strictly kosher grab-and-go meals are provided at the Fountain Market.
On Passover we ask,”why is this night different from all other nights?”
Our Jewish Life team and Elon Hillel student leaders have created an incredible, innovative, joyful Passover seder, where we can celebrate the Jewish people’s journey from slavery to freedom.
To all who celebrate, we wish you all a Chag Sameach (or happy holiday). May we all value the freedoms we enjoy, and hope for greater freedom for all.
