Evening for Elon hosted at Gannett

More than 250 alumni, parents and friends of Elon University turned out for a special gathering Nov. 20 near Washington, D.C. The "Evening for Elon" was held at the Gannett corporate headquarters in Tyson's Corner, and included tours of the USA Today newspaper offices.

Elon alumus Gary Evans '74, director of circulation/marketing for USA Today, made arrangements for the use of the facilities. The event included a reception and an Elon update presentation by President Leo M. Lambert. Other speakers included Nan Perkins, vice president for institutional advancement, and Mary Ruth, director of alumni/parent relations. Among the Elon administrators hosting the event were Paul Parsons, dean of the School of Communications, and Brad Hamm, associate dean.

Communications Advisory Board member Lee Rainie was on hand to meet and greet people. Rainie is director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Another board member, Reggie Murphy, marketing research manager for USA Today in the D.C. area, also dropped by to visit.

School of Communications alumni on hand at the event included Akilah Owens, Leigh Wheeler, Shawna Foord and Tim Archibald.

Catering costs for the event were covered by a donation by Elon University Board of Trustees member Mary Straub '82, who was editor of Elon's student newspaper, The Pendulum, during her years as an undergraduate.

Evening for Elon events are a way for alumni, parents of Elon students and friends of Elon in cities distant from the campus to find out about current university news and keep in contact with one another.
