Student Research Q&A Ashley, a history major, says she has always been interested in learning about the past. Here's what else she had to say about her research in the social sciences. Why did you decide to major in the social sciences field? I enjoy research and feel like a social science background provides skills that can be applied to a wide range of activities and careers. What are your career goals? I am planning on attending graduate school at Duke University next year to pursue a master's degree in European history. I would then like to continue until I receive my doctorate, and ultimately I want to teach on the college level. What are the benefits of studying the social sciences at Elon? The program has provided me with invaluable research experience and has also enhanced my critical thinking skills. I have gained research experiences that most students would only receive on the graduate level. I've also seen the ins and outs, frustrations and rewards of research, so I feel well prepared for graduate studies. What is your original research project? I am researching Leo Haas, an artist from the Theresienstadt Ghetto in Prague. He was the only survivor from an important group of artists from the ghetto, and I have spent the past two years researching Haas's life during and after World War II. Last fall, I traveled to the Czech Republic to interview Haas' adopted son. |
