New ESTV Comedy Wins Three Telly Awards

Elon Student Television's newest and only scripted television show, "Newsbreakers," won three Bronze Telly Awards this summer after being in production for just one year.

Newsbreakers, which student producers say is a cross between “The Daily Show” and “The Office,” won two Bronze Telly Awards for its episode “It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time” in the Student and Comedy categories and one Bronze Telly for the episode “Pilot” in the student category.

“It was a great time and a great achievement,” said Communications Fellow Jay Light, the head writer and co-creator. “We're all very proud because we are such a young show and the Telly Awards is such a great honor.”

The Telly Awards are national awards distributed by the New York City-based organization deigned to honor outstanding local and regional television commercials, productions and non-broadcast video productions.

“We couldn't believe it,” said Tim Mollen, a co-creator and actor. “To think that what we write and improvise would make people laugh is really something to be proud of.”

“Newsbreakers” is one of five shows offered on ESTV. It began as an idea originated in FreshTV and was established last spring in a joint effort among three freshmen and one junior.

“Newsbreakers” airs every night at 8 on ESTV Channel 14. The show will also be available on the ESTV Web site soon.
