Sports Symposium:
"The
Past: The History of College
Athletics"
11 a.m. (to noon) in Whitley Auditorium (be seated by 10:45
a.m.)
2006 is the 100th anniversary of the creation of the NCAA as
the regulatory body of college athletics, stemming from
Theodore Roosevelt summoning the presidents of Harvard, Yale
and other football powers at the time to the White House to
address a mounting toll of deaths and injuries in college
games. Dr. Joe Crowley, former president of the University of
Nevada at Reno and author of the 2006 book "In the
Arena: The NCAA's First Century," will focus on how
the NCAA was born and the issues it has faced through the
years, such as the marriage of college athletics with radio
and television and the initiation of national
championships.
"The
Present: The NCAA and College Athletics
Today"
2 p.m. (to 3) in Whitley Auditorium (be seated by 1:45
p.m.)
Dr. Myles Brand, president of the NCAA, will address current
issues such as the financing of college athletics, Title IX
gender equity, the elimination of Indian mascots, and
recruiting practices.
"The
Future of College Athletics"
7:30 p.m. (to 8:30) in McCrary Auditorium (be seated by 7:15
p.m.)
This panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Crowley, will
feature President Brand and two Elon alumni: University of
Miami basketball coach Frank Haith and University of Maryland
athletics director Deborah Yow.
