An article by
Frances Ward-Johnson, Associate Professor in the School of
Communications, recently appeared in the Fall edition of
The Public Relations Strategist, a magazine
published by the Public Relations Society of America.
The article featured interviews with a group of public
relations practitioners from around the country discussing
the current state of diversity in the PR profession. With
varied backgrounds, the practitioners have more than 70 years
of combined experience in PR firms, corporations, and
nonprofit organizations. Their overall consensus: The PR
profession has a long way to go before it mirrors the
diversity of the U.S. population; corporations are doing a
better job than agencies in recruiting diverse employees; and
mentoring is crucial for practitioners of color. The article
