Each fall, the School of Communications
welcomes a new class of Fellows. Here you can meet the 2005
Fellows: Conor Britain
is from Hopkinton, N.H. This communications major is
concentrating in broadcast with a minor in political science.
In high school Conor headed projects highlighting the
baseball and basketball teams. He also produced a documentary
about a local politician which was shown at one of his
political events. At Elon Conor is involved with
"Phoenix14News" and "WinStuff," hoping to
eventually land a studio position in both organizations. You
may hear him on WSOE on his radio show. "WSOE is a great
resource for Elon students," Conor said. "It
demands speaking to an audience and is good for helping
people get comfortable with that." Conor is an avid
baseball fan and hopes to be involved with sports in the
future.
Lauren Brown is from Wendell, N.C., and
plans to major in corporate communications with a minor in
business. In high school, she was the photography editor for
the yearbook, and for the past two years, she has done PR for
the Carolina Mudcats Minor League Baseball team. At Elon, she
sells ads for The Pendulum and is an Isabella Cannon Leader.
"My dream job would be working as an advertising
executive for a national magazine," she said. Lauren
plans to secure an internship when she studies abroad in
China or London.
Bernadette
Bui is from Germantown, Md. She is a broadcast
communications major with a theatre minor. In high school,
she worked with her news TV show and was very involved in all
the theatre productions. Bernadette is currently involved
with two ESTV shows on campus, "Phoenix14News" and
"Win Stuff." She is also a member of Alpha Chi
Omega and works on various theatre productions. She plans to
study abroad in London for a semester. Bernadette hopes her
experiences at Elon will guide her toward her dream
career.
Caitlin Edberg is from Quinton, Va. She is
an Elon University communications major and has not yet
decided on her concentration. Caitlin has already taken
advantage of the many opportunities in Elon's School of
Communications by shooting footage for
"Phoenix14News" and participating in FreshTV. She
says her dream job would be to host the show "Great
Hotels" on the Travel Channel. "I really want to
take advantage of Elon's study abroad program," she
said. "A spring semester in London would be
unbelievable!"
Sean Flynn is from Raleigh, N.C. While in
high school he was editor of his school newspaper and focused
primarily on sports due to his involvement on both the
varsity baseball and football teams. At Elon he plans to be
either a journalism or corporate communications major. After
graduation Sean hopes to work in advertising agency or be a
columnist for a magazine or newspaper. "There is nothing
as rewarding as knowing you wrote a good piece and having
others appreciate reading it," he said.
Olivia Hubert-Allen is from Elon, N.C.
During high school she served as editor-in-chief for her high
school newspaper while also serving as a correspondent for
the youth section of the local paper. As an Elon freshman,
Olivia has a radio show on the college station and plays for
the club soccer team. She has also been involved in writing
for The Pendulum, Elon's student newspaper. "I want
a job that allows me to be creative," she says
"Writing has always been a passion of mine so it only
seemed fit to be a journalism major!" She hopes to
attend law school after graduation and eventually work in
media law.
Timothy Johnson is from Salem, Va. He plans
on majoring in communications with a concentration in either
broadcast or cinema and hopes to minor in political science.
Along with earning his Eagle Scout in his high school years,
he made movies with his friends and in his senior year he
helped start a school television show. At Elon, he has gotten
involved with the Phoenix14 News sports department, works for
the Phoenix Weekly and was a co-host on the FreshTV show. He
looks forward to studying abroad and discovering exactly what
he wants to do in the field of communications.
Megan Kirkpatrick is from Morgantown, W.V.
In high school she worked on her school's award-winning
yearbook as a sports writer. She plans on majoring in
corporate communications with minors in business and
political science. Her interest in public relations led her
to the Elon Student Television PR Team. She enjoys the group
atmosphere and being a part of the nationally recognized
student-run shows. In the future, she would like to work with
a sports team or perhaps in the political arena as a press
secretary or event planner. She came to Elon because of the
amazing school of communications. ?The school is so dedicated
to the building, the studios, the labs, and of course, the
students,? Megan said.
Kevin Kline is from Cary, N.C. He became
interested in communications after working on his high school
television news show. At Elon, Kevin participates in
"Phoenix14 News." He also has been a part of the
FreshTV program, which prepares freshmen for advanced
television production. Kevin dream job is to work in
Washington D.C., as a press secretary.
Stefanie Meyers is from Columbus, Ohio, and
plans to major in Communications and minor in Political
Science. She is also on Elon's Varsity Volleyball Team
and is a part of the Communications Learning Community. In
high school she focused on photography and film. Stefanie
hopes to be involved in different activities ranging from
professional beach volleyball to documentaries to politics in
Washington, D.C. She is hoping to receive an internship this
summer in Nashville, Tenn., working in the music industry.
She looks forward to her future at Elon and all the
opportunities it will present.
Alysse Miller is from Upper Arlington,
Ohio. Although presently undecided, she is leaning towards a
concentration in broadcast. Throughout high school Alysse
worked with her school's literary magazine as well as the
theater and music departments. She is now involved in WSOE,
co-hosting a show, and ESTV. "I hope to get more
involved with ESTV and documentaries during this year to get
more experience in the field of broadcast." After
graduation, Alysse hopes to get a job involving TV, movies or
music.
Kelly Murtagh is from Baton Rouge, La., and
was drawn to Elon University for its superior communications
program. She plans on majoring in communications with a
concentration in broadcast and a minor in business
administration. She participated in Fresh TV and is currently
a part of Phoenix 14 News. After graduation, Kelly aspires to
be a television broadcast journalist. "I feel so
fortunate to be a part of the Fellows Program because it gave
me a head start in pursuing my career in
communications," she said. Kelly is also a member of the
Phi Mu Sorority and Intervarsity and was on the
president's list.
Anne Nicholson is from Dublin, Ohio. During
her four years of high school, Anne helped produce a
bi-weekly magazine style show, and a daily morning news
program that aired in front of the faculty and student body.
Both shows received the Crystal Communicator Award three of
four years she was involved in production. Anne also
co-produced and directed a commercial for The Columbus Parade
of Homes, which aired on local television. Anne's
concentration in communications is broadcast. At Elon, Anne
is on the production crew for "Phoenix Weekly" and
was a segment producer for the FreshTV program. In the future
Anne hopes to become more involved in the School of
Communications and plans to study abroad. "I really love
that Elon's School of Communications provides so many
opportunities for students to get involved and gain
real-world experience, even for freshmen."
Gordon Paulson is a freshman from Raleigh,
N.C. While in high school he worked on his school's news
program for three years. He is majoring in journalism and
would like to become a sportswriter for a major newspaper.
Gordon has written articles for the sports section of The
Pendulum. "I enjoy the amount of freedom that being a
writer allows," he said.
Chelsea Peabody is from Roswell, Ga. She a
corporate communications and music (voice) double major. In
high school she worked on her school's literary magazine,
Avalon, as well as in event planning for the International
Thespian Society and Student Council. At Elon she is a member
of PRSSA and works in PR for ESTV. Outside of Communications
she is active in the Resident Student Association, the North
Area Council, Alpha Chi Omega and Emerging Leaders. After
graduation she hopes to work in promotions in the music
industry or in radio.
Katie Reese is a resident of DuBois, Penn.,
and plans to major in broadcast communications. She is a
member of Alpha Chi Omega and has also been involved with
FreshTV. She hopes to become a producer for television shows
such as "Oprah." In her junior year, she plans to
spend a semester abroad studying in England and traveling
Europe.
Kathleen Schneider is from Cincinnati,
Ohio. She is majoring in journalism at Elon University. At
Walnut Hills High School she was an editor on the yearbook
during both her junior and senior years. "I have loved
the field of journalism ever since I worked on my school
newspaper in the sixth grade," she said. Her dream is to
work as an editor for a magazine or newspaper. She tutors
twice a week at a local elementary school.
Kat Stroscio is from Rochester, Mass. She
is majoring in communications with a concentration in cinema
and a possible minor in biology. During high school she was a
competitive dancer, part of her school's television
broadcast, and also enjoyed performing in musicals. Someday
she hopes to edit movie trailers, commercials or
documentaries. "It doesn't really matter as long as
I'm editing," she said. Here at Elon she was part of
the FreshTV program and is currently working on editing a
documentary. She works in the ESTV office, and she is also a
part of the Elon dance team as well as the Greek organization
Zeta Tau Alpha.
Bethany Swanson is from Bethesda, Md. Here
at Elon, she plans to major in journalism and minor in art
and political science. She was news editor and copy editor of
her high school's newspaper, The Pitch. Bethany has
always loved to write and edit work. As an Elon freshman, she
is a member of the Communications Learning Community and an
ad designer and writer for The Pendulum. In the future,
Bethany hopes to be able to use her education at Elon to work
as a copy editor for a major newspaper or magazine.
David Vollrath is from Annandale, Va. In
high school, he produced several student films and worked on
various independent film projects. He has submitted work to
the 48 hour Film Festival and produced a feature length film
that was recently submitted to Tribeca Film Festival. David
is majoring in communications under the cinema concentration
and plans to pursue a future career in directing or
editing.
Kristin Zachary is from North Wilkesboro,
N.C. She plans on majoring in Journalism and English
(concentrating in Creative and Professional Writing). In high
school, Kristin worked on the school yearbook and started a
school newspaper. She is now Vice President of the Society of
Professional Journalists and a member of the Student Life
staff for Elon's yearbook, Phi Psi Cli. Kristin hopes to
become the editor of a major magazine after graduation. She
also hopes to write a novel later on in her career.
