School of Communications Hosted Live TV Broadcast of Triad CEO Forum July 11

UNC-TV produced a statewide live telecast from the School of Communications studios July 11, which featured President Leo M. Lambert and other Triad leaders. They discussed the economic outlook for central North Carolina.

Participants included Elon University President Leo M. Lambert, North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Stanley Battle, Elon trustee Louis DeJoy, New Breed CEO and Chairman of the Board, Guilford County State Senator Kay Hagan and BB&T Chief Operating Officer Kelly King.

Elon University President Leo M. Lambert
The work of Leo M. Lambert, eighth president of Elon University, focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision designed to place Elon among the nation's best small, selective, private universities. Such endowed programs as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership have strengthened the school's academic climate. Other milestones of Dr. Lambert's tenure include AACSB International accreditation of the Love School of Business, ACEJMC accreditation of the School of Communications, completion of the Koury Business Center and opening of the Elon University School of Law in Greensboro.

North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Stanley Battle With numerous awards and honors—and as author or coauthor of 11 books and more than 60 articles and book chapters—Stanley Battle is an accomplished teacher, researcher, and speaker. Dr. Battle earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Connecticut, as well as a master’s degree in public health and a doctorate in social welfare policy from the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University and Millennium Leadership Institute of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Dr. Battle began his academic career at the University of Minnesota and held faculty and leadership positions at Boston University, the University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he was promoted to vice chancellor of student and multicultural affairs in 2000, and, in 2003, president of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. He becomes N.C. A&T’s chancellor July 1.

New Breed CEO and Chairman of the Board and Elon Trustee Louis DeJoy
Louis DeJoy's leadership led New Breed, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1968, to develop broad-based capabilities—including world-class physical distribution, information services, and supply chain management solutions. With more than a quarter century of experience in both public accounting firms and private corporations, private industry and governmental agencies seek DeJoy's advice on various logistical, warehousing, and transportation projects; inventory management; valuation techniques; and operation and cost systems. DeJoy won the 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Carolinas’ Award. He serves on the boards of trustees for Moses Cone Health System, the Fund for America Studies and Elon University. He also belongs to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Institute of Management Accountants.

State Senator Kay R. Hagan
Now in her fifth term in the North Carolina Senate, Senator Kay Hagan brings experience in business and civic affairs. An attorney, licensed to practice in both North Carolina and Florida, Senator Hagan has 10 years of experience in the banking industry. Ranked as one of the “Top Ten Effective Senators” in North Carolina and praised by leaders of the business community, the heads of non-profit organizations and citizens throughout Guilford County for her clear and focused advocacy on behalf of Guilford County. Senator Hagan currently serves as Co-Chair of the Appropriations Committee and Co-Chair of the Pensions, Retirement & Aging Committee. She also serves as a member of the following committees: Commerce, Small Business and Entrepreneurship; Education/Public Instruction; Finance; Health Care; Joint Select Committee on Economic Development Incentives; and the Select Committee on Employee Hospital and Medical Benefits.

BB&T Chief Operating Officer Kelly S. King
A member of the Board of Directors of Branch Banking and Trust Company and named BB&T's chief operating officer effective July 1, 2004, Kelly King has served the company in varied roles across the state since joining BB&T’s Management Development Program in 1972. His many professional and community affiliations include a number of current and past chairmanships, board seats and memberships. These positions include Chair of the Piedmont Triad Leadership Group, former Vice Chair of the American Bankers Council; former Chair of the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center; Former Chair of the North Carolina Bankers Association; Former board member, NC Economic Development commission; Former Director, North Carolina Association of Financial Institutions; Former Director, North Carolina Enterprise Corporation; Former Treasurer, North Carolina Partnership for Children and many more.
