Endowed Scholarships for Teacher Candidates

Listed below are endowed scholarships that were established and receive ongoing support from generous donors who support students in our educator preparation programs.

  • W.G. Brogan Honorary Education Scholarship - to be awarded to undergraduates seeking teacher certification, or a graduate student enrolled in the M.Ed. program, or a licensure-only candidate.
  • Congdon Education Scholarship - to be awarded to a rising sophomore teacher education major from outside the state of North Carolina who demonstrates potential, enthusiasm and a passion for teaching and who has demonstrated financial need. (Awarded once every three years)
  • D.C. & E.K. Gilliam Education Scholarship - to be awarded to a needy student from Alamance County who is majoring in education. Second preference is to be awarded to a needy student from Alamance County.
  • William Andrew Hopkins Endowed Scholarship in memory of Margaret T. Hopkins - Preference will be given to one or more deserving male students with verified financial need, majoring in Elementary education and with good scholastic records.
  • Ada Smith Johnston Scholarship - to be awarded to the most outstanding junior student studying to be a teacher; money to be spent on senior year college expenses.
  • Hattie McKinney Ledbetter '29 Endowed Scholarship - to be awarded to students majoring in elementary education who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better. Second preference will be awarded to any student majoring in education. If the prior criteria cannot be met, this scholarship shall be awarded to any deserving Elon student.
  • Steinbrenner Family/Elizabeth Molloy Scholarship in Education - to be awarded to a rising sophomore teacher education major from outside the state of North Carolina who demonstrate great potential, enthusiasm, and passion for teaching and who have a demonstrated financial need. The award will be renewable pending acceptable academic performance.
  • Aubrey Wilson and Rubye M. McBride Scholarship - to be awarded to a student preparing to teach in the public schools.
  • Howard and Virginia Richardson Scholarship - to be awarded to a full-time student preparing to teach.
  • Annie Ross Somers Scholarship - to be awarded to a junior or senior preferably majoring in elementary education with a minimum GPA of 3.0, & a resident of North Carolina: First preference from Alamance County; second preference from the Piedmont Triad; third preference from any county in North Carolina.
  • Elwood E., Sr. and Lucile C. Stone Scholarship - to be awarded to a promising student who is pursuing a career in education.
  • Hattie M. Strong Scholarship - to be awarded to students in their final year of study. Candidates must have demonstrated success and enthusiasm in field experiences and have demonstrated financial need, (Awarded contingent upon foundation funding)
  • Theo Strum Scholarship - to be awarded to a junior or senior seeking teacher licensure.
  • Cynthia N. Ward Education Scholarship - is to be awarded to a resident of North Carolina or Virginia planning a career in teaching.
  • Mable Somers Peeler Scholarship - to be awarded to one student from St. Mark's Church majoring in education or student majoring in education.
  • Pesce Family Endowment - to be awarded to rising junior or senior education majors, excluding teaching fellows, who are studying abroad and taking at least one course in education.
  • Betty L. Bowman Scholarship Fund - to be awarded to one education major. Student must be from Alamance County, the Piedmont Triad region, or from North Carolina.
  • William Daniel and Nannie Estelle Bowman Scholarship - to be awarded to one or more students majoring in education. Students must be from Alamance County, the Piedmont Triad region, or from North Carolina.
  • Sallie Boren Goley Presidential Scholarship - to be awarded to one student majoring in education with strong academic merit.
  • Louise Anne Lambert Scholarship - to be awarded to one student majoring in special education and who shows a strong financial need.
  • B. H. Franklin Family Annual Education Scholarship - to be awarded to one deserving undergraduate student with verified financial need majoring in special education, math or science education, or education in that order of preference.
  • Marshall and Minnie Hook Endowment - to be awarded to students preparing to teaching with preference to those teaching mathematics or science.
  • Catherine N. Walker - to be awarded to deserving students majoring in education who maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
