Republican
Senator Fred Smith, a candidate for governor in 2008, visited Elon
University School of Law Feb. 28 to discuss his campaign platform with students. Smith was the special guest of Elon Law Republicans. Smith also talked with students about his career as a lawyer.
After completing law school at Wake Forest University, Smith served as
Captain in the United States Army JAG Corps for four years. He went on
to become a successful attorney, entrepreneur, farmer/cattleman and
homebuilder.
He has served as president of the North Carolina Cattleman’s
Association and the Commercial Law League of America. Today his
businesses provide more than 600 jobs in Wake and Johnston counties.
In 2002, Smith was elected to the first of three terms in the state
Senate, where he has worked to increase government efficiency, create
jobs, improve education and protect family values. In the 2007 session
of the legislature, Smith introduced an amendment to the state
Constitution defending traditional marriage in North Carolina. He has
also worked to control spending priorities with the Taxpayer Protection
Act.
