About G. Smith Jackson

Dr. G. Smith Jackson came to Elon in 1994 as Dean of Students. He has been in his current position as the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students since 1998. He is the chief student affairs officer for the university and serves on the president's cabinet. He is responsible for all aspects of student life, including 15 departments that provide student services and co-curricular programs for student learning and development. These services and programs range from residence life to student leadership development to health and counseling services to religious and spiritual life, to name a few.

Prior to coming to Elon, he was the Dean of Students at Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama, and has served in student life positions at Saint Louis University, Auburn University and Muskingum College in Ohio. His career in higher education administration has spanned more than 30 years.

Dr. Jackson received his undergraduate degree in psychology and master's degree in counseling from the University of Alabama. He earned his doctorate of education degree in counselor education (college student development) from Auburn University. He has authored 10 articles and book chapters and made more than 30 presentations at professional conferences on the topics of experiential learning, designing residential environments, service learning, Greek life, strategic planning and academic-student life partnerships. He is a member of the American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and he is a reviewer for the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice.

Dr. Jackson is a native of Dothan, Alabama. He is married with three children and lives in Burlington, North Carolina.
