School of Communications Expansion

Location: Main Campus, at the intersection of Williamson Avenue and Lebanon Avenue
Fundraising Goal: $15 million

Elon University’s School of Communications is recognized as one of the top-20 communications programs in the nation, preparing talented men and women for success in the nation’s top media, public relations, and entertainment companies. Elon seeks to continue investing in one of the university’s premier programs by dramatically expanding facilities in the School of Communications, which each day engages 1,100 students, or about 20 percent of the student body. The expansion includes two new facilities and two existing buildings that will provide a total of 96,000 square feet of space for the school, which currently operates in 38,330 square feet in McEwen Building. This project will create a dynamic communications quadrangle and additional attractive entryway to Elon’s campus.

Project components include:

  • A new two-story, 45,000-square-foot facility that connects to McEwen Building through a Grand Atrium featuring a large digital screen and includes a 250-seat theatre, an Innovation Lab, and additional classrooms
  • Glass exteriors for two existing television studios and a glassed-in student media center in McEwen Building to house student media and publication groups, as well as a digital “news zipper” for installation on the building’s exterior
  • A new 5,000-square-foot Communications Pavilion on Lebanon Avenue to serve as a lab space and home of the Imagining the Internet Center, as well as provide space for campus events
  • Repurposing Long Building on Lebanon Avenue to house the school’s master program in Interactive Media, and all future graduate programs in the school
  • Constructing several new video editing and audio suites
