Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where is check-in?
Registration will be held in the International Pavilion.

2. When is check-in?
June 23 from 1-2 p.m.

3. If I'm flying, when should I make my return flight?
DISCOVERY participants should make their flight home for June 29th either from Greensboro or Raleigh. Please make all flight arrangements departing after 11 a.m. on June 29th. Shuttles will leave campus at 8 a.m.

4. Are there shuttles from the regional airports?
Yes, there will be shuttles to pick up all students who are flying in.
Please make your arrival time in Greensboro or Raleigh no later than 11 a.m.
A return shuttle will depart from Elon at 8 a.m. on June 29th. If you need transportation to or from the airport, please call in or e-mail your information to (336) 278-5323 or fse@elon.edu. Make departure reservations no earlier than 11 a.m.

5. Do we sleep in tents the whole time?
Yes! We are always in tents.

6. Should I bring a tent if I have one?
Yes! We have tents for people who do not have one, but if you have your own we welcome the addition. Please let us know if you will be bringing a tent if you have one, and a tarp for it if possible. A 2-3 person tent is preferred.

7. Where and when do we meet?
You will need to arrive during check-in time, 1-2 p.m. on Monday, June 23rd. DISCOVERY begins upon arrival at Elon. Dress appropriately (comfortable, outdoor clothing).

8. When should I have my parents pick me up afterward?
We will arrive on campus the night of June 28th but the program does not conclude until Sunday June 29th. You may have your parents pick you up any time before noon on June 29th.

9. What should I wear when I get to Elon?
You should arrive dressed for fun. We will have activities the first night you arrive so be sure to wear something comfortable, including shoes! There will be time to change, if needed.

10. When is the money due?
Your $160 deposit for DISCOVERY must be received by May 1, 2008. Upon acceptance, participants will receive information regarding the balance deadline. Some need-based scholarships are available. For further information, e-mail fse@elon.edu and include the specific program in which you are interested.

11. What if I get sick and have to back out of the trip?
If you get sick before the trip and cannot come, we will call down the waiting list to try to find someone to take your spot. However, we cannot reimburse your money unless we find a replacement.

12. Who are the facilitators and staff?
The facilitators are current Elon students. All facilitators are CPR and First Aid certified. Additionally, two Elon professional staff members will be on site for DISCOVERY.

13. Who participates in DISCOVERY?
DISCOVERY is specifically designed for first-year students. Participants will beĀ 18 first-year students who are entering Elon in the Fall of 2008.

14. Do I need camping experience to go on this?
No! DISCOVERY is purposely geared for both the experienced and the inexperienced camper to be able to enjoy.

15. How is DISCOVERY different from the other summer programs?
DISCOVERY is a unique experience that combines the leadership styles learned in Adventures in Leadership with the community service emphasized in Pre-Serve. We incorporate vital activities and discussions into the week that will help to ease your transition to Elon.
