Emergencies
Whether it is a broken leg at 8 p.m. or a sudden snowstorm,
emergencies are an inevitable part of life. We know that as
parents, you are concerned about the safety and welfare of
your son or daughter. Knowing where to turn for assistance
and/or information is important in any crisis -- whether it
affects one student or 4,000. The Student Life Staff
maintains a 24-hour administrator on-call system to assist
students and parents in the event of an emergency. Students
and parents may access the emergency staff member by
contacting the Office of Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555.
The staff will have someone call you within a few minutes.
There is also a counselor on call 24 hours while school is in
session.
Occasionally, inclement weather may necessitate alterations
in class schedules. Students and parents should consult
E-net! to receive the most current information regarding
class schedule changes.
Elon University maintains an emergency preparedness plan in
the case of a natural or national disaster. In the event of a
situation, campus personnel are available around the clock.
Students will be directed to the E-net!
home page for the most updated information regarding
campus plans and directives. Parents and families may also
keep abreast of campus updates by accessing the E-net! home page.

Residence Hall
Opening and Closing Schedule
The residence halls and Loy Center houses do not close
during Fall Break or the break between Winter and Spring
Term. The residence halls and Loy Center do close, however,
at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring breaks. Closing and
opening times for are listed below.
Closings/Re-Openings

10 a.m. on May 19, 2004*
* Graduating Seniors may stay until 2 p.m. on May 22,
2004
Students must make arrangements to leave their residence
halls before closing each break and within 24 hours of their
last exam in December and May. Students are not
allowed to remain in the residence halls/Loy center after
closing. Students will be given instructions for
closing their rooms during break times and do not have to
remove all belongings from their rooms. If transportation
leaves after the residence halls/Loy Center have closed,
students may wait with their luggage in the Office of Campus
Safety and Police.
Students are not allowed to re-enter the residence halls/Loy
Center until the official time of opening each break time.
Please make travel arrangements so that your son or
daughter does not arrive back to campus prior to the opening
of the residence halls/Loy Center. If your son or
daughter must return to campus before the residence halls
open, he/she must make arrangements to stay at an off-campus
location (i.e. local hotel) at his/her expense.
Airport Shuttle
Information
Shuttle Service is provided to Greensboro's Piedmont
Triad International Airport and the Raleigh/Durham
International Airport at designated break times throughout
the year. Shuttle service will be available on the following
dates and times. Students must sign up at least
fourteen days before the first departure of
each break to be guaranteed a reservation. After the
guarantee date, seats will be on a first-come, first-serve
basis until the remaining spots are filled. To sign up, pay
the non-refundable fee at the Bursar's
Office, and bring the receipt with ALL
flight information to the Moseley Center Information Desk.
For more information, please visit the Moseley Center Web
site.
R.N. Ellington Health and Counseling Center
The R.N. Ellington Health and Counseling Center is located
in the heart of campus, behind Moseley Center. The center
offers basic medical and short term counseling services to
the students, faculty and staff of Elon University. The
Health Service is an ambulatory acute care facility. Students
with chronic conditions are advised to work with a medical
practitioner in the area who can monitor their long-term
needs. Counseling Services operates on a brief,
solution-oriented model. Students who require more long-term
psychological care are referred to an off-campus provider.
Each full-time student enrolled at Elon pays a health fee,
which covers appointments at Health and Counseling Services.
All charges for procedures, medications and visits to off
campus providers are at the student's expense. Expenses
incurred at the center may be paid at time of service via
cash or Phoenix Card, or will be billed to the student
account.

During the hours of operation, a mid-level provider or

bring something to study or read while they wait.
Hours of Operation for Counseling

Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Counseling Services schedules appointments to meet with
counselors. Clients are seen on a walk-in basis only in the
event of an emergency. All university counselors are licensed
Professional Counselors by North Carolina.
Early Intervention
Early intervention is the key to quick recovery! Students
are urged to visit health services at the first sign of
illness. Health services does stock over-the-counter
medications for colds, headaches, etc. However, if a cold or
headache strikes in the evening or on weekends when the
center is closed, students may want to have on hand the
following items:
-
Basic first aid kit
-
Over-the-counter pain medications (per your preference)
-
Extra prescriptions for eyeglasses or contacts
-
Cold or allergy medicine
-
Thermometer
Health Insurance
All full-time students are required to carry some form of
health insurance. For those who do not have coverage
or those who do have coverage but wish to secure additional
coverage, Elon University coordinates a plan which satisfies
university insurance requirements. Insured students may cover
their dependents. More detailed information may be obtained
from the insurance agent, ABCO 100 at 1-800-222-5780. You
should provide insurance information on the Health History form
as indicated. Each student should have proper insurance
identification when he or she comes to Elon.
For those who already have insurance, please review your
policy carefully to determine coverage for any illnesses or
injuries which may require services beyond those offered at
Health Services or Counseling Services. Students are
responsible for all charges incurred at off-campus providers.
If your plan is an HMO or other managed health care plan, your
student may be covered only for emergency medical treatment.
Any other follow-up visits or treatments are subject to your
insurance deductibles and guidelines.
Class Excuses
When patients come to health services, they are provided
documentation to verify the date and time they were seen in the
center. This is the only documentation health services
provides. The service does not issue class
excuses. Students are urged to contact their faculty
immediately when an illness or accident prevents them from
attending class and to present their verification forms to
their faculty immediately upon returning. Occasionally,
students who become ill may be required to go home for a few
days to speed recovery and/or minimize exposure to other
students. In this event, the Health Services staff will contact
Academic Advising, who will notify professors. Students are
responsible for making up all work missed.
Transportation
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and
from off campus medical/psychological providers. Most students
have cars or can arrange transportation through friends. If a
student cannot secure transportation, then he/she may contact
Campus Safety and Police or the Ellington Center. Either of
these departments can call a cab for the student. The student
does not have to pay cash at time of service. The university
pays the cab company and places the charge on the student
account for reimbursement. The charges will be posted to be
paid with the next student billing for tuition and fees.
After Hours Medical Care
One of the most frequently asked questions is where students
receive care when Health Services is closed. Elon University
has an arrangement with Doctor's Urgent Care and
Cornerstone Medical Center that allows our students to be
treated at these facilities when Health Services is closed.
Both facilities have evening and weekend hours. Students will
be treated at these facilities and have their out-of-pocket
costs deferred. The provider will bill your insurance company
and any outstanding amounts will be billed to the university.
Elon pays the provider and in turn places the charge on the
student account for reimbursement. The charges will be posted
to be paid with the next student billing for tuition and fees.
This arrangement allows students to be treated without
providing cash payment at the time of service and guarantees
payment to the provider. Emergency medical treatment when
either of the two providers are closed is handled through the
Alamance Regional Medical Center emergency room.
Cornerstone Medical Center: 1041 Kirkpatrick
Rd., (336) 538-0565
Call ahead of time. Hours: Monday-Friday 4
p.m. - 7 p.m.

(336) 222-8888

Saturday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Medical and Psychological Emergencies
The Student Life staff maintains a 24-hour on call system to
assist students and parents in the event of an emergency.
Students and parents may access the emergency staff members by
contacting the Office of Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555.
The staff will have someone return your call within a few
minutes. There is also a counselor on call while the residence
halls are open.
Academic Questions
If a student has a question or concern about an academic
course, the student should consult with the course professor
directly. Other academic processes are found in the Elon University Academic
Catalog.
Please note that students must take their exams during the
scheduled exam period. Exams may be changed only in the event
the student has more than 2 exams scheduled for one day or in
case of medical emergency. Please consult the exam schedule
prior to making travel arrangements.
