Majors

Astronomy A.B.

The A.B. in Astronomy is suitable for students with interests in other fields who wish to cultivate the ability to ask critical questions about the universe and a solid understanding of phenomena that governs it.

Please contact Chris Richardson if you have an interest in pursuing a major in astronomy.

Astronomy A.B. Degree Requirements & Courses

* It is recommended that all Astronomy A.B. majors enroll in Planetary Astronomy (PHY 2040) in the first semester of their first year.

Astrophysics B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics degree is appropriate for students interested in graduate school or in pursuing careers in fields that require strong computational and technological skills.

Please contact Chris Richardson if you have an interest in pursuing a major in astrophysics.

    * It is recommended that all Astrophysics B.S. majors enroll in Planetary Astronomy (PHY 2040) and University Physics I (PHY 2210) in the first semester of their first year.

Physics A.B.

The A.B. in Physics is suitable for students with interests in other fields who wish to develop strong critical thinking skills and a solid understanding of the most foundational science.

Please contact Martin Kamela if you have an interest in pursuing a major in physics.

Physics A.B. Degree Requirements & Courses

* It is recommended that all Physics A.B. majors enroll in University Physics I (PHY 2210) in the first semester of their first year

Physics B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Physics degree is appropriate for students interested in graduate school or in pursuing careers in physics or other technical fields.

Please contact Martin Kamela if you have an interest in pursuing a major in physics.

Physics B.S. Degree Requirements & Courses

* It is recommended that all Physics B.S. majors enroll in University Physics I (PHY 2210) in the first semester of their first year

Double-Major in Engineering and Physics

Elon’s engineering students can easily double-major in physics, allowing students to deepen their understanding of scientific foundations and explore fascinating contemporary physical phenomena. Fulfilling Physics A.B. requirements can be accomplished with just a handful of additional courses, because several engineering and physics courses are cross-listed between the two disciplines.

Please contact Martin Kamela if you have an interest in pursuing a double-major in physics.

Physics A.B. Degree Requirements & Courses

Engineering Physics B.S.

The engineering physics major is designed to function with Elon’s dual degree engineering program. Students receive a B.S. from Elon in Engineering Physics and a B.S. in Engineering from an affiliated engineering school.

Please contact Richard Blackmon if you have an interest in pursuing an Engineering Physics B.S.

Science Education Secondary Science Comprehensive Physics A.B.

The Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Studies, in cooperation with the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education, offer programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Science Education with Secondary Science Comprehensive Licensure in the areas of biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics.

This licensure program prepares teachers for careers in high school teaching across the different science disciplines. The program emphasizes practical hands-on experience in classrooms, educational theory, and pedagogy as well as a breadth and depth of science content knowledge. The program culminates with a full semester of teaching in a high school setting.

Please contact Martin Kamela if you have an interest in pursuing a Secondary Science Comprehensive Physics A.B.

Minors

Physics Minor

The physics minor is suitable for students with interests in other fields who wish to develop strong critical thinking skills and a solid understanding of the most foundational science.

Please contact Martin Kamela if you have an interest in pursuing a minor in physics.

Physics Minor Requirements & Courses

Astronomy Minor

The Minor in Astronomy provides a coherent course of study and in-depth experience in the sciences that is accessible to students with limited previous scientific training. It will provide an essential foundation for studying the context of the Earth in the cosmos, through to the formation of stars, galaxies, and the universe itself. This minor would be a great complement for a communications major (interested in science journalism), a physics major (interested in astrophysics), or anyone with a passion for astronomy.

Please contact Chris Richardson if you have an interest in pursuing a minor in astronomy.
