Language Assessments

Online language assessment exams are available in most of the languages taught at Elon (French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish). To arrange an in-person assessment for Chinese, Hebrew, and/or Arabic; or to indicate the need to be assessed in a language not offered at Elon, please contact languages@elon.edu.

Students MUST take an assessment in the language(s) they studied in high school or at a previous college or university even if they do not plan to continue to study that language at Elon and even if they plan to start a new language at Elon.

Testing occurs during specific dates throughout the academic year, but students MUST complete their assessment by October 1 of their first full year at Elon.

Are you ready to start an assessment?

  • Note: Assessments in Arabic, Chinese and Hebrew are offered only on campus. Contact languages@elon.edu for more information.
  • For incoming, new students (first-years and transfers) looking to take the assessment for the first time online: the first attempt at the assessment is offered online for French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish in May and from mid-July to mid-August. Incoming first-year and transfer students will receive an email with a link to the assessment from the Admissions Office prior to the May and Summer assessment periods.

Note: It is important to take the assessment as early as possible so that fall course schedules can be finalized.

Assessments are offered on campus during new student orientation, during the first week of classes, and during the final week of September (prior to the October 1 deadline for completing the language assessment). Note: A second attempt at the assessment must be completed in person.

  • For continuing students (who did not take the assessment prior to the October 1 deadline): For the first attempt at the assessment, you may request of the language assessment coordinator (Dr. Brandon Essary; bessary@elon.edu) an individualized link to take the assessment online in French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and/or Spanish. You may request access to assessments only for languages you have previously studied.

Note: A second attempt at the assessment must be completed in person.

Assessments are offered on campus at the beginning of each semester and just prior to registration for the following semester.

Note: if you miss the October 1 deadline, you must take at least one course at the level of your verified assessment level.
