Join a team

Whether you’re solving a problem for a client, working toward a team deadline or competing against students from other universities, you’ll put your knowledge into practice. Some challenges draw directly on your major, while others let you combine technical skills with your broader interests. Beyond course-based projects, you can join hackathons, take on challenges through student organizations and participate in regional and national events.

Senior Projects in Elon Engineering Design (SPEED)

This isn’t a project you turn in and move on from.

This is your capstone: a full year on one real problem, for a partner who’s counting on your team and your answer.

You start working on real problems in your first semester.

In two required courses, engineering students design, build and test their own projects focused on engineering challenges, from expanding access to clean water to strengthening cybersecurity.

Game Design

Bring your game to life.

In a two-semester capstone project, undergraduates bring skills and knowledge from their diverse majors to produce music, craft narratives, create digital art and program games which are frequently published on Steam.

The Competitions

Outside the classroom, student teams bring their designs, code and prototypes to hackathons, races and other competitions. You’ll work under pressure, adapt when something fails and draw on the same problem-solving skills you develop in your courses.

Phoenix Racing

Design and build an electric Formula-style race car from scratch.

You compete against other universities at Formula SAE Electric. It’s engineering-led, but the team pulls in members from across majors, including computer science, business and communications, to run everything from the electric drivetrain to sponsorships.

Elon Innovation Challenge

Your entrepreneurial idea, put to the test.

Work with your peers in different majors to develop a solution to a pressing problem, then pitch it to entrepreneurs and industry professionals. You’ll receive practical feedback and compete for funding to continue developing your idea.
