Every game is built from choices about what a player can do, see, hear and discover. In Elon’s Game Design minor, you’ll make those choices with students whose skills and interests differ from yours. Choose a specialty that draws on what you already study or takes you in a new direction, then bring that perspective to a collaborative game project. You’ll see how your contribution fits with the work of the whole team.

What You'll Study

Game Design

You’ll study how games work, develop a concept and learn the steps of game production. Then, in two collaborative development courses, you’ll join students with different specialties to prototype, playtest and complete a game. Each person brings particular skills; the team works out how the design, visuals, sound and code come together.

Find Your Part in a Game

Every student takes the shared game design and development courses, then chooses a specialty sequence. You can build on what you study in your major or develop skills in an area you want to explore.

  • Art: Create digital artwork that helps establish a game’s visual world.
  • Visual Communication: Explore visual design and multimedia content for what players see and how they navigate.
  • Cinema and Television Arts: Bring screenwriting, animation or motion graphics to what happens on screen.
  • Computer Science: Develop programming skills and apply them to gameplay.
  • English: Explore creative writing and visual storytelling for characters and worlds.
  • Music Production: Develop recording and production skills for a game’s audio.
  • Professional Writing & Rhetoric: Use multimedia writing and visual design to shape a game’s content.
