How might we ethically use AI for more effective problem-solving?

This workshop was co-developed with Elon’s Advancing Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education organization.

In this workshop, we focus on the what, when, and how of ethical and practical AI usage. Participants are guided through several hands-on exercises utilizing artificial intelligence and leave with transferable experience using AI for better problem-solving.

This workshop is especially valuable for Communications, Business, and Computer Science students, as well as courses and programs integrating emerging technologies. Classes or groups focused on research, writing, data analysis, or problem-solving—such as capstone courses, student organizations, and professional development programs—would benefit from learning how to use AI tools effectively and ethically.

In this session, we will be covering the following topics/strategies:

  • What AI is and why it’s useful
  • Three key principles of ethical AI use
  • Practical tips for effective prompt-building (a student favorite!)
  • A hands-on activity applying AI in design thinking to tackle real-world student challenges (e.g., securing internships, crafting a professional development plan, enhancing research paper writing skills, or optimizing study strategies).
