Public Relations Internships in Washington, D.C.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, established in 1862, inspires interest in and promotes the understanding of medicine — past, present, and future — with a special emphasis on tri-service American military medicine.  As a National Historic Landmark recognized for its ongoing value to the health of the military and to the nation, the museum identifies, collects, and preserves important and unique resources to support a broad agenda of innovative exhibits, educational programs, and scientific, historical, and medical research.

 

The selected candidate will assist the Public Affairs Officer and Public Affairs Specialist in media relations and marketing the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s exhibitions and public programs.

 

Job Duties:

*Assists with writing, proofreading, copying and distributing press materials (press releases, media advisories, media kits, etc.) *Assists with designing, editing and proofreading of museum publications (brochures, fliers, invitations, posters, program booklets, etc.) *Assists in department development of ideas for packaging museum events.

*Assists with marketing museum exhibitions and public programs through calendar listings, mailings, public service announcements, etc.

*Generates story ideas, writes content for and assists with distribution of newsletter and e-newsletter, Flesh & Bones.

*Updates website content.

*Attends tourism and community events to promote museum programs with Public Affairs Specialist/Public Affairs Officer.

*Updates and manages Access database with new museum contacts.

*Researches new prospective audiences.

*Completes special projects when assigned.

 

Qualifications:

*Undergraduate student (sophomore, junior or senior) pursuing a degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or related field.

*Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Internet research and basic computer skills.

*Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign CS2, Adobe Photoshop CS2 or other design software a plus.

*Strong written and oral communication skills, sharp attention to detail, knowledge of AP style, creative thinker, and self-starter.
