Wednesday, February 1
Announcement & Unveiling of Black History Month at Elon
Location: College Avenue Banners, electronic displays in Moseley and Johnston halls, Facebook, Twitter, and a special feature in the upcoming edition of The Magazine of Elon.
Enjoy the physical reminders throughout campus of Black History Month events and celebrations of the contributions of Blacks to Elon and to the world!
Debut of select African pieces from Elon’s International Art Collection
Location: Elon University Arts West
Under the direction of Ethan Moore, coordinator of the Elon Art Collection, students curate and present select African pieces from Elon’s International Art Collection. A large body of African art was donated to the university by James Lankton. Using elements of Fred Wilson’s Mining the Museum Display and Barbara Bloom’s use of veils or curtains in her artwork students will create a display focused on masks in the collection – highlighting the need to “unmask” the assumed identity of black Americans (as it relates to display of African art). The exhibit will be on display through February 29.
A Celebration of Black Arts and Letters

This week-long celebration highlights the works of Black writers and artists from the United States, Africa and the African diaspora.

Time: Bus Departs at 10:30 a.m. and returns by noon (Worship Service begins at 10:45 a.m.)

5th annual Diversity Day with Keynote Address by Judge James R. Spencer
Location: Elon University School of Law, 201 North Greene Street in Greensboro, N.C.

The Honorable James Randolph Spencer will deliver the keynote address at Elon University School of Law’s Diversity Day on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Former United States President Ronald Reagan appointed Judge Spencer to serve as the first African-American judge of the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Virginia, serving as chief judge from 2004-2011.
African-American Read-In Day & Book Sale
Location: Koury Business Center, LaRose Digital Theatre

This event started by AAASE founding coordinator, the late Professor Wilhelmina Boyd, invites the campus community to come read selections from their favorite authors and works. A wide selection of children’s and yound adult books will be on sale for 50 cents each throughout the session. Organizations are invited to purchase books to donate to their various charities. Following the reading and book sale, join us for a reading of the play Valued Voices, which explores the state of education in our country.

From Tyler Perry comes a colorful film of great magnitude, where different women find common ground. Like a rainbow, each woman provides a different hue and perspective. Faced with the greater spectrum, they are gifted hope and inspiration.The film lasts 2 hours and 14 minutes, and is adapted from Ntozake Shange’s 1975 experimental play. This is a play for every woman!
