Campus Recreation and Wellness and director Larry Mellinger were featured in an article by Campus Rec Magazine about how campus recreation departments are promoting mental wellness amid growing concerns about mental health on college campuses.

“The Mental Health Crisis” highlights Elon and two other college campus recreation departments for their work to improve the overall mental health of students and the roles they play in developing campus-wide partnerships to address the issue.

The article references several Elon programs that promote mental wellness like the Act-Belong-Commit framework, which aims to both build and inspire a culture of health on Elon’s campus. The author also discusses the Well Connected Challenge, which encourages student engagement in campus activities specifically during the first six weeks of the academic year.

“It has been great to identify and target students who are under-involved in a much different way than reaching out to students who apparently do everything,” Mellinger said.

The author highlights other Campus Recreation and Wellness programs and partnerships like the Mental Health Summit, the annual Wellness Fair and other initiatives meant to engage students and promote mental wellness in the campus community.
