Spring semester 2023 gets underway at Elon

Monday, Jan. 30, marked the first day of classes for the 2023 spring semester, with many students returning to campus from studying abroad during Winter Term.

Spring semester at Elon got underway on Monday, Jan. 30, following a Winter Term that saw close to 800 students head out around the globe and those on campus undertake intensive coursework.

During this first week of classes, Elon students were welcomed back to campus with the first College Coffee of the semester, a beloved weekly tradition at the university. This special College Coffee in McKinnon Hall on Tuesday recognized the university’s yearlong commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the fire of 1923 that destroyed Elon College’s Administration Building. With the theme “Rising from the Ashes: A Century of Innovation,” Elon will host a series of observations throughout the year to honor the resilience and innovation that have marked the 100 years since the fire, a pivotal moment in the university’s history.

Students are invited to the Spring Organization Fair on Feb. 8 held from 5 to 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym. The event offers students a chance to learn about all the opportunities afforded to them as Elon students.

The 2023 Elon University Speaker Series will continue on Monday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium with the Voices of Discovery Science Speaker Series featuring Indira Turney, She is a postdoctoral fellow at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. The spring semester has a full lineup of cultural events with dramatic productions, art exhibits and musical performances.

There will also be ample opportunities to cheer on the many Phoenix athletic teams as both men’s and women’s basketball, tennis, track and field, baseball and softball get their seasons underway.

Later in the academic calendar, Elon will mark Spring Break from Friday, March 10, until Monday, March 20, and the Easter Holiday to be observed on Monday, April 10. The last of classes is Tuesday, May 9, with Commencement for the Class of 2023 scheduled for Friday, May 19.
