Sport management majors selected for COSMA honor society induction

Ten School of Communications students will be recognized at the 2024 Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) Conference held Feb. 2 in Montgomery, Alabama.

In recognition of their exceptional academic performances and involvement in professional development activities related to the sport industry, 10 Elon University sport management majors will be inducted in February into the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) Chi Sigma Mu Honor Society.

Induction into Chi Sigma Mu (CSM) is limited to high-achieving students enrolled in COSMA-accredited programs. Elon’s Department of Sport Management was granted accreditation in February, becoming one of 36 such programs in the United States.

To be eligible for CSM induction, students who are majoring in sport management must have completed at least 60 credit hours and maintain a 3.4 GPA. Additionally, according to COSMA guidelines, the inductees are expected to “perform at the top of their class academically, volunteer within their department, college, and institution, pursue professional development opportunities, and foster community between students and faculty within their program.”

Elon’s inductees include Katy Boehmer-Abbott ’24, Shannon Buntin ’24, Brynja Burton ’25, Emilia Cappellett ’24, Maxwell Casey ’24, Sarah Dawkins ’25, Ryan Harper ’25, Daniel Schulman ’24, Nicholas Ullian ’24 and Cedar Zobel-Williams ’24.

“I am immensely proud to acknowledge this exceptional group of students selected for the COSMA honor society from our sport management program,” said Cara Lucia, associate professor and chair of the Department of Sport Management. “I appreciate their unwavering dedication to academic excellence coupled with their passion for sport management. These students embody the qualities of leadership, integrity, and a profound commitment to the principles of our industry. Congratulations to these outstanding students who are not only the future of our field, but also exemplify the best of it today.”

According to Young Do Kim, associate professor of sport management, in addition to their stellar performance in the classroom, this year’s inductees have completed multiple internship experiences, held numerous leadership positions, and conducted service activities on campus and in the greater community.

“They are exemplary sport management majors who make a difference in – and elevate the reputation of – our department,” he said.

Lucia echoed Kim’s sentiments, commending the students for their leadership, drive and determination. “Being selected into the Chi Sigma Mu Honor Society is not just an accolade; it’s a testament to the dedication and promise these students bring to the dynamic field of sport management,” Lucia added.
