The Student Life Emergency Response System

All emergencies (medical, psychological, police) should be directed to 9-1-1 FIRST. Once emergency assistance has been dispatched, Campus Safety Dispatchers will then notify the Student Life Emergency On-Call Response System for follow-up.

Situations that may be deemed a crisis (not-life threatening) that occur during normal working hours (8:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday) should be referred first to the Office of Student Health and Wellness at (336) 278-7200. The Student Health and Wellness staff will respond within 30 minutes or will route your call to Campus Safety and Police for follow-up by the Student Life Emergency Response System.

Call 9-1-1 for a life threatening situation requiring more immediate assistance.

Parents or students who have an afterhours or weekend situation that is not-life threatening but requires an urgent administrative response or support should access the Student Life Emergency Response System by calling Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555. The Campus Safety and Police staff will dispatch the situation to the appropriate response person. Someone will contact you within 30 minutes of your initial call to Campus Safety. The Student Life Emergency Response System provides administrative response to students and families in crisis situations afterhours and on weekends. The Student Life Emergency Response System includes the Administrator on Call, The Counselor on Call, Violence and Bias Response, and a Senior Student Life Administrator.  Campus Safety and Police will dispatch the appropriate staff member based on the nature of the situation.  Once the immediate situation has been addressed by the emergency response staff member on call, the situation may be referred to the appropriate administrative office the next business day.

Situations that may be referred to the Student Life Emergency Response System include:

  • Medical and psychological emergency follow-up including dispatching administrative support at the hospital for more serious illnesses and injuries
  • Notification of emergency contacts/parents in the event of a serious medical or psychological situation
  • Death in the family or close personal relationship where the student may need support or assistance
  • Missing students
  • Physical plant situations which pose a security threat or major disruption to campus
  • Initial response to bias or gender based violence issues, including sexual violence (not confidential response)
  • Response to security concerns
  • Notification of emergency contacts/parents in the event of a student arrest and bail or return to campus conditions

Students who are seeking confidential support for acts of bias and violence may call SAFEline (336-278-3333).SAFEline is Elon's confidential support hotline for members of the Elon community who may be experiencing or who have experienced identity-based bias, discrimination or harassment, sexual violence, domestic/relationship violence or stalking. 

Note: Contacting SAFEline will not access emergency responders; anyone needing emergency police or medical attention should call 9-1-1. 

For all crises, emergencies, and student wellness checks (except those dispatched to SAFEline), a member of the Campus Safety and Police staff may be dispatched first to assess and stabilize the situation. Also, parents or other emergency contacts may be notified in the event of an emergency or crisis situation.

After Hours Psychological Emergencies

As with medical emergencies, if a student is experiencing a psychological emergency call 9-1-1 for immediate assistance.

 (e.g., suicidal behaviors, violence or threats of violence toward others, self-injury needing immediate medical attention, mental confusion or disorientation, out of control behavior, significant impairment by drugs or alcohol)

Students experiencing a psychological crisis should contact Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555 and ask to speak to the after-hours counselor on call. You will need to provide contact information. Campus Safety and Police will relay the message to the counselor on call who will call you within 30 minutes to complete a brief risk assessment of the situation and recommend steps for additional support or follow-up to ensure safety. This may include a referral to the hospital for an in-person assessment.

Please note the counselor on call provides crisis management interventions, not counseling/therapy after hours.  The counselor on call needs to remain available to respond to crisis situations that may arise.  Once a student is stabilized they will be referred to Counseling Services for follow-up care during business hours.
