Welcome to Elon!

We are excited you are joining us for Spring 2017! Whether you are coming to Elon as a first-year student or a transfer student, New Student Orientation will ensure that your transition to Elon is smooth and enjoyable. Download the Spring Orientation handbook and schedulehere. Exact times and locations of events and activities are still subject to change, so make sure you check back closer to Move In Day to make sure you have the most accurate information!

Arriving on Campus

Move In Day for Spring 2017 is Saturday, January 28th. When you get here, check in at the Inman Admissions building between 8:30am-3:00pm. You will receive your Orientation schedule, campus map, technology information, and a student planner. Then, drive out to your Residential Neighborhood to get your key and meet the staff and students living and working in your neighborhood.

Parking
When you check in, please park in the visitor lot on O’Kelly Avenue. This parking lot is a short walk to the Inman Admissions building as well as the Moseley student center. Each Residential Neighborhood has its own parking, and Orientation staff will be available to help you transport your belongings from your car to your room.

Orientation Activities

Orientation activities will occur on Saturday and Sunday. You will participate in a small group of 10-12 students and one Orientation Leader, an upperclass student who has been trained to give you all the information you will need to be successful at Elon. Whether you are new to college, or just new to Elon’s campus, Orientation Leaders will make sure you feel confident and competent as you begin your Elon experience.

You will also have the chance to meet with your academic advisor, the person who will work with you to help plan for coursework and experiential learning until you declare a major. Once you declare a major, you will be assigned a new academic advisor in that disciplinary area.

In addition to making sure you are prepared to begin class and engage in academics at Elon, Orientation will also help you learn about social life and cultural values at Elon. Elon’s values a strong, inclusive community in which students understand the importance of different identities respectfully engage with each other across those differences.

New Student Convocation

Held on Sunday afternoon, New Student Convocation is an important Elon tradition in which new students and their families gather together to hear an official welcome to the University from the President, the Provost, and other senior administrators. New students also receive an acorn, a symbol of the ways in which they will grow during their time at Elon. Please arrive early and dress neatly for this special event. Photos from Fall Convocation can be seen on Elon’s Flickr site as well as social media!

Parents and Family

Our staff understands that a student coming to college is a transition for the whole family! Whether the student comes to campus in August or January, we want to make sure the whole family feels welcomed as part of the Elon community. There are several events specifically for parents over Spring Opening Weekend, including a meeting with your student’s academic advisor, an information fair about campus resources and programs, and a coffee social for you to meet other Elon parents. Of course, families are invited and encouraged to attend New Student Convocation and to take photos on our beautiful campus after the ceremony. The Office of Parent Engagement is another great resource for you to learn about being an Elon family.

Are You Ready?

Are You Ready? is a resource for incoming students that helps you learn about life at Elon between the time you are accepted and the time you arrive on campus. Find videos of current students talking about their experiences with Engaged Learning, Core Curriculum, Residential Neighborhoods, Inclusive Community, Orientation, and much more. In January, be on the lookout for a video featuring transfer and spring admit students talking about their experience transitioning to Elon in the spring semester. Although the site is primarily targeted towards students, parents and families will also find the content valuable and informative.
