Research/Creative Interests

I study how all different kinds of people (students of any age, alumni, professionals in any field, game designers, lawyers, scientists, artists, anyone really) use different kinds of technologies to write — this includes multimedia writing (with visuals, video, audio, etc.), social media writing, professional writing, and how people are developing new ways to write with generative Artificial Intelligence. I study what people produce with writing (final products), but also how, where, when, why, and with which technologies they write.

What types of “data” do you commonly use?

I study how people write, including where, when, how, with whom, and with which technologies they write. I collect this data by studying their actual writing process, by using interviews and surveys, and by studying their final products/what they write. I do qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

What types of collaborations are you open to?

I’m open to collaborating with students, faculty, and staff. I especially like to study how people outside the university write (alumni, people of all ages who belong to social groups, professionals in any field, etc.). With the emergence of generative AI, I’m especially interested in studying how different kinds of people are integrating AI into their writing process.

What agencies, organizations, or foundations do you have experience with to apply for grants?

  • Conference on College Composition and Communication

Student Qualifications

  • I’m interested in working with students from any major or minor, and they do not have to have any special experiences with writing or writing technologies (including AI).
  • Students should have a genuine interest in the type of writing, and the type of writers, they want to study – that’s the only qualification necessary.
