A fundraising effort by the Elon University men’s golf team and spearheaded by an MBA student debuts next month with “Eagles for Haiti,” a pledge drive that asks sponsors to donate money toward recovery efforts in the battered Caribbean nation for every eagle scored this season by male golfers in the Southern Conference.

The "Business of NASCAR" business course raised $700 during Winter Term for the Victory Junction Gang Camp, which brings the course’s three-year total contribution to more than $1,200 for a nonprofit organization in North Carolina that serves children with chronic or serious medical conditions.

On the brink of collapse in 2008, two American icons – General Motors and Chrysler – turned to Uncle Sam for billions of dollars to stay in business. But as assistant professor Christina Benson finds in her latest research, by protecting domestic automakers to save U.S. jobs in the short run, Washington may have created bigger headaches for the American economy in the not-so-distant future.

Tina Das, professor of economics in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, was recently elected vice president and member of the board of directors of the International Economics Honor Society Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE). Professor Das is the faculty advisor to the Pi Chapter of ODE at Elon University and was elected to this position during the American Economic Association national meeting held in Atlanta, January 2010.

Mary Gowan, Dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, has been elected to be the Vice Chair Economic Development for the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce for 2010. Dean Gowan has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber since January of 2008.

C. Catherine Chiang, assistant professor of accounting in the Love School of Business, recently published an article, “Product Diversification in Competitive R&D-Intensive Firms: An Empirical Study of the Computer Software Industry,” in the January/February 2010 issue of Journal of Applied Business Research.

When Nick Igdalsky '99 visits Daytona International Speedway this weekend to begin his first full season in the ARCA Racing Series, he’ll find himself running against a familiar name in motorsports: Danica Patrick, an international sensation making her debut in stock car racing in the same field as the Elon University alum.

A 2007 graduate of Elon University represented North Carolina in the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas on Jan. 30. Katherine Southard, a double major in business administration and dance, won the North Carolina contest in June.

Kerrii B. Anderson, former president and CEO of Wendy's, will be featured as the Love School of Business' Legends of Business speaker on March 4, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. in the LaRose Digital Theatre. The event is open to all Elon students, faculty, and staff. A reception will follow.
