Preventing Plagiarism
The best way to prevent plagiarism is to teach students how to find and use sources in discipline-specific ways. While English 110 provides an introduction to finding and evaluating sources and to synthesizing information from sources, we can't introduce students to every discipline's source-use conventions within a one semester class.
We encourage faculty across the curriculum to extend on the foundation created in English 110 by:
- Introducing students to the citation system used in your discipline;
- Sharing tips and strategies with students on the best way to find and evaluate disciplinary sources; and
- Giving students low-stakes practice with using sources in your discipline before asking them to complete high-stakes assignments.
College Writing faculty have compiled a variety of strategies and activities for teaching source use. Click here to browse relevant materials from College Writing Faculty Development workshops.
