These skills and attributes are:

  • Defining problems and tasks
  • Writing, Communicating and Analyzing
  • A critical eye and ear
  • Ability to retrieve information - libraries, books, periodicals, Internet
  • Planning and executing research
  • An open mind to new ideas and solutions
  • Sensitivity to individuals and tolerance of cultural differences
  • An ability to learn what you need in order to accomplish a task

These skills and attributes in combination with the Elon Experiences - study abroad, internships, service learning, leadership and research - will help you to get a job and most importantly to be a good citizen.

A liberal education is a philosophy of education that empowers individuals, liberates the mind, cultivates intellectual judgment, and fosters ethical and social responsibility.   A liberal education prepares all students for  a world of complexity, diversity and change ( AACU).

Liberal Learning - Association of American Colleges and Universities

Elon University Career Center

Elon University maintains a special identify as a comprehensive university that centers the curriculum on the liberal arts and sciences.  Because all students must successfully complete at least 58 hours in the liberal arts and sciences through their four years as undergraduates, those who choose majors in the professional schools (Business, Communications, Education) are considered dual citizens in Elon  College, the College of Arts and Sciences.

At Elon, the arts and sciences are at the core of all majors.  The schematic below provides an overview of the Elon curriculum.  All students must complete:

14 credits of the first-year core,

the foreign language graduation requirement,
a major,
12 credits of advanced studies in the arts and sciences, including an interdisciplinary seminar,
