Job Family: Library
The Library job family plans, develops and implements library strategy, collections and services. Collaborates with academic colleagues, students, and outside scholars to ensure that library collections are accessible and support academic research and instruction. Monitors library policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as university policy.
Library Sub-Families
Academic Research Librarian
Positions in the Academic Research Librarian sub-family function as liaison librarians to
designated academic and administrative units, partnering to provide research instruction and consultation to enable members of the Elon community to access relevant resources to meet their diverse information needs. Activities include instruction, individual consultations, outreach to encourage usage of library resources, functioning as Personal Librarian, building collections to support curriculum and research, and assessment to improve library services.
Archives
Positions in the Archives sub-family accessions, arrange, and describe physical and electronic manuscript and university archives materials. Assists with planning, scheduling, implementing, and documenting standards, policies, and best practices related to physical and digital collections, metadata and schema, workflows, and quality control. Faculty librarians in this subfamily’s activities include instruction, individual consultations, outreach to encourage usage of library and archival resources, functioning as Personal Librarian, building collections to support curriculum and research, and assessment to improve library services..
Library Access Services
Positions in the Library Access Services sub-family serve as primary point of contact for patrons and visitors at the library’s public service desk. Performs duties in Circulation, Interlibrary Loan or Reserve departments. Checks in and out materials; inspects materials for damage, verifies due date and collects fees for lost items; assists patrons with informational questions; sorts materials and prepares for reshelving; issues and updates identification cards according to established procedures. Performs duties requiring the use of a variety of forms, reports or procedures. Provides patron assistance, locates materials, provides information. Maintains departmental or area records. Performs miscellaneous duties such as building oversight and trouble-shooting computer and printer problems.
Library Collections Services
Positions in the Library Collections Services sub-family are responsible for purchasing, receiving, collecting, cataloguing and distributing technical and commercial information resources from a wide variety of internal and external sources to meet information needs and support the operating activities of the institution. Activities include collection development, acquisitions, licensing & contracts with vendors, maintaining access to serials and online databases, research to answer general inquiries related to the availability of resources, and investigating the types of information that would be beneficial to purchase for the collections. Provides system management and operation support required to provide quality resource management and availability. Works with
hardware and software vendors to troubleshoot and resolve issues associated with local and wide area networks.
