Some questions begin in another field but call for something to be designed and tested. The Engineering Design minor gives students outside engineering a way to develop those skills and collaborate with engineers. You’ll study engineering, computing and mathematics, then apply design methods to a community partner’s needs. What you know from your major can shape the problems you notice, the people you consider and what a useful solution looks like.

What You'll Study

Engineering Design

You’ll start with engineering fundamentals, graphical communication, computer science and calculus. Additional engineering or computing courses let you explore an area of interest. In Engineering Design for Service, you’ll work with a small team and a local community partner to design a device or system in response to an identified need.

Connect it to Your Major

Your major can help you recognize a need and understand the people affected by it. Engineering design gives you ways to develop and test a response.

For example:

Environmental studies

Design a tool that helps a community group measure or conserve water.

Performing arts

Develop and test a mechanism for a stage set or installation.

Business

Build a digital exhibit that brings together writing, images and archival sources.

These are possible directions. The problems you choose to pursue can draw on knowledge from both your major and the minor.
