They pulled me to understanding where we came from, where we are going, and where we continue to go.
Toriano Baldwin is a teacher at High Point Central High School. He is a strong believer in the importance of having Black male teachers as role models for young people.
When he was in high school, there were not many teachers who taught African American history. However, when Toriano was in 12th grade, his school offered a class about African American history for the first time in his school. Inspired by that class, he often went to his dad to learn more about about Black history.
When discussing his hopes for future generations, he advised youth to get engaged in the community. Toriano hopes to empower youth by providing them with information in the same way his father and teachers had. In this way, he hopes his students become involved so that they can actively learn from the communities they live in.
