Change is sometimes fearful.

Catherine Smith came to Alamance County with her husband in 1980. Around the time they began to settle into their new home, MLK Day was approaching and the Smith’s were looking to celebrate it with their new community in Alamance. To Catherine’s dismay, she could not find an organized event to honor Dr. King.

The very next year, Catherine and her husband started the county’s first observance of MLK. This event has continued every year since, and has manifested into the Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition of Alamance, an organization that provides activities and education to inspire conciliation and the betterment of citizens in the community.
