Jay Mebane never imagined himself as a firefighter, until an officer for the Burlington Police suggested he consider it for a future career.
Mebane was born and raised in Burlington and took an early interest public safety thanks Sergeant Slaughter, the DARE officer at his school. Mebane also credits much of his success to his biggest role model: his mother, who overcame adversity to provide for her family.
He began by volunteering at the Mebane Fire Department. and fell in love with it. He began his full time career at the Burlington Fire Department and by 2020, and he was named Fire Chief, celebrating his long-time commitment to protecting his community. Mebane encourages the next generation to explore new opportunities and lean on others for help.
