The only time you look down on someone is when you’re helping them up.

At 89 years old, Joe Foust still sings the praises of being “blessed and highly favored” and it’s for good reason. Deeply moved by his mother’s call to action as a young man, Joe quickly turned around his negative and non-empathetic approach to life and became a man of service. He recalled his mother’s plea for him to leave behind his gruff, mean exterior and embrace the inherent love and compassion we should have for others.

Joe became the first Black gospel radio program in Burlington on WSML and WPCM which he ran for an incredible 54 years. The station became a voice of the community, with Joe remarking that he would put important announcements from others onto the station. Not only was his radio program a household name, but Joe also toured in gospel singing groups including The Pearly Gates and The Mighty Tenernears.

Joe continues to inspire the community through his dedication throughout life to helping people and serving others. He generously shares anything he has with those who need it, from feeding the hungry to providing anyone with anything they needed.
