Legacy is about showing others that you are here.

Shineece Sellars is a passionate advocate for preserving local African American History

Shineece Sellars is an advocate for the African American community in Alamance County. She collects and preserves local African American history at the African-American Cultural Arts and History Center, an initiative started by her mother, Jane Sellars. Following her mother’s passing in 2019, Shineece decided that she wanted to continue Jane’s work and shed light on the stories of African Americans in Alamance County, stories that are often overlooked or excluded from other collections of Alamance history.

Shineece is passionate about legacy. Black history in books has been destroyed as a way to erase groups of people and Black culture, in turn erasing their identity. Shineece believes that people should embrace their differences rather than conforming to what society deems as “better.” She wants to ensure that young Black kids are able to hear the stories of people who look like them and who grew up in the same community and have someone to look up to. She wants them to know that they are allowed to take up space and be their own person.
