The Facilities job family provides services related to operation, maintenance, and renovation of all university property, including student housing, university buildings, facilities, equipment and vehicle fleet. Provide oversight and management of environmental health and safety programs that protect the environment, provide safe and healthy conditions at the university.

Facilities Sub-Families

Building Trades

Positions in the Building Trades sub-family are responsible for managing or performing tasks that may range from routine and unskilled to highly skilled in the building trades including: carpentry, locksmithing, masonry, and painting. Work may involve maintenance, repair, refurbishment or construction, replacement, fabrication, installation, alteration, moving and set-up of building/facility components such as wall, ceilings, doors, windows, foundations, roofs, locks, floor and wall coverings, cabinetry, furniture and related building equipment. Positions require the application of skills and use of tools, equipment and methods specific to each trade; planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, customer service, teamwork, and compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations, and applicable building codes.

Construction Planning & Management

Positions in the Construction, Planning & Management sub-family are responsible for managing or performing work related to integrating construction project conceptual, functional, and engineering design. Planning activities include conducting feasibility studies, architectural design, and worksite layout design. Activities also include supervision and/or participation in the execution of the construction project plan, including general construction activities, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) activities, and the maintenance of site safety. Duties may also include planning, coordinating and implementing furniture, equipment, office and factory layout and moves.

Custodial

Positions in the Custodial sub-family are responsible for maintaining the institution’s facilities in clean and orderly condition, in accordance to the institution’s standards. Activities may include: Cleaning/sanitation of institution facilities, including custodial work, and maintenance of a wide variety of flooring systems including carpet, terrazo, tile, LVT and polished concrete.

Facilities Management

Positions in the Facilities Management sub-family are responsible for coordinating and administering the activities of a range of administrative or staff functions to ensure efficient operation of the institution’s buildings, facilities, utility distribution systems, mechanical machinery and equipment, transportation and automotive operations. Activities include: Supervision of internal staff and external vendors in areas such as facilities security, facilities maintenance & repair, custodial & grounds keeping services, office administration and secretarial services; Planning efficient utilization of space and facilities and planning and executing the capital renewal and repair of facility components; Examining facilities and evaluating elements, such as HVAC and lighting, for size, condition and suitability.

Landscaping & Grounds

Positions in the Landscaping & Grounds sub-family are responsible for maintaining the institution’s grounds in clean and orderly condition, in accordance to the institution’s standards. Activities include: Maintaining grounds, including gardening and the general repair and maintenance of those grounds.

Mechanical Trades

Positions in the Mechanical Trades sub-family are responsible for managing or performing tasks that may range from routine and unskilled to highly skilled in the mechanical trades including: HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and automotive repair. Work may involve maintenance, repair, refurbishment, replacement, rebuilding, troubleshooting, of such building components as chillers, condensers, cooling towers, compressors, refrigeration units, air handling and HVAC units, building control and automation systems, electrical systems and components, appliances, generators, fire alarm systems, plumbing systems and components, water heaters boilers, or maintenance and repair of a wide variety of transportation and support vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, utility vehicles, tractors, aerial lifts, etc. Positions require the application of skills and use of tools, equipment and methods specific to each trade; planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, customer service, teamwork, and compliance with applicable safety, building codes and compliance with state regulations.

Sanitation & Recycling

Positions in the Sanitation and Recycling sub-family collect waste, compost, recyclable materials and both sorting and transporting it to the proper location for removal. Employees support special events by providing and handling waste collection receptacles and remove materials both during and after events. Employees also maintain collection vehicles and equipment, waste receptacles and waste collection areas.

Sustainability

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for coordinating, facilitating implementation, communicating, and measuring the university’s sustainability initiatives. Employees lead the strategy within the area of sustainability, monitor progress of sustainability efforts, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders regarding sustainability, and conduct education and outreach efforts to increase the practice of sustainable behaviors and enhance awareness of sustainability initiatives and accomplishments to foster a culture of sustainability on campus. Duties include strategy development, reporting and assessment, collaboration among departments and divisions, program development and implementation, event planning and execution, communication, and student supervision and mentoring.

Transportation Services

Positions in the Transportation Services sub-family are responsible for managing or performing vehicular transportation services and are responsible for transporting passengers to and from specific locations. Activities may include: Ensuring transportation is provided in a timely and cost-effective manner and analyzing transportation operations and identifying areas for improvement.
