The Information Technology job family acquires, designs, implements and operates the university’s information technology solutions for faculty, staff and students, including computer hardware, operating systems, communications, software applications, data processing and security.

Information Technology Sub-Families

Business Intelligence

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for performing complex data research and analysis to support business operations including: Creating data mining architectures/models/protocols, statistical reporting, and data analysis methodologies to identify trends in large data sets; Analysis may be applied to various areas of the business (e.g., Market Economics, Supply Chain, Marketing/Advertising, Scientific Research, etc.); Researching and applying knowledge of existing and emerging data science principles, theories, and techniques to inform business decisions.

Database Administration & Reporting

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for managing or performing work that focuses on vendor selection, configuring, maintaining, and generating reports for a function-specific information system including: Processing function-specific transactions and maintaining function records/data; Generating reports and conducting analysis on function-specific data; Ensuring the accuracy of information entered into the system and testing new features of the system as they are implemented to verify accuracy of function-specific procedures.

Information Security

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for managing or performing work associated with developing, communicating, implementing, enforcing and monitoring security controls to protect the institution’s technology assets from intentional or inadvertent modification, disclosure or destruction including: Designing, testing, and implementing secure operating systems, networks, and databases; Password auditing, network based and Web application based vulnerability scanning, virus management and intrusion detection; Conducting risk audits and assessments, providing recommendations for application design; Monitoring and analyzing system access logs; Planning for security backup and system disaster recovery.

Instructional Technology

Positions in this sub-family plan, coordinate and administer programs, processes, facilities and technical systems in support of teaching, learning, research, communications and administrative purposes.

IT Infrastructure & Systems Administration

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for managing or performing work associated with IT infrastructure & systems administration (internal or outsourcing staff) including installation, configuration, administration, support and maintenance of IT software and hardware systems, IT data/voice network systems, and internal databases. Activities include ensuring the uptime, performance, and resource availability of the computers and other IT systems; matching the institution’s resources with the demand placed on them; monitoring institution’s wide area and/or local area network performance; identifying and resolving network problems; upgrading network hardware, software and telecommunications equipment; IT data center facility operations; and ensuring the quality, accuracy and security of databases.

IT Leadership

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for leading teams and processes associated with the management of the institution’s information technology resources (including computer hardware, operating systems, communications, software applications, data processing and security), telecommunication systems, and software/database products. Activities include developing information technology strategies, polices and plans; managing the acquisition, implementation, maintenance and use of information technology resources; training and supporting technology users; telecommunications network planning, operations and site acquisition; programming software/database products for sale to external customers; developing PC, online, and mobile games; and internet product management & operations.

IT Project Management

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling resources/processes to achieve project/program objectives within scope, time, quality, and budget constraints. Technical project/program management work requires the staff member to have some foundational knowledge in the specific area in order to advise on scope changes, QA and other more technical aspects of the project.

IT User Support

Positions in this sub-family are responsible for providing support to staff end users in areas of personal computers/servers/mainframe applications, data/voice network, and ERP systems including: Acquiring, installing, and upgrading PC components & software and planning for/responding to service outages; Diagnosing problem source through discussions with users and coordinating with internal institution support and operations groups and/or with vendors to resolve problems; Responding to user requests to research complex problems associated with the institution’s telecommunications networks (voice and/or data); Providing real-time end user ERP systems support, problem identification, and training to facilitate knowledge transfer and prevent problem reoccurrence and knowledge transfer.
