Anticipating the inevitable linking of the world’s NIIs, we might someday bring into our homes the Louvre, the Hermitage and the Athens Archaeological Museum, with the ability to tailor the offerings of these grand institutions to our personal needs and interests.
Predictor: Dertouzos, Michael
Prediction, in context:In a 1991 article for Technology Review, MIT researcher/administrator Michael Dertouzos writes:”Just as highways have state police, weigh stations and emergency phones, the information services will be available at all times to everyone. These services would include a collection of white and yellow pages that list the NII’s [National Information Infrastructure’s] clients, services and rate schedules. Other common servers might translate text or images from one competitor’s format to another. There might also be servers on the NII that act as brokers, helping match users’ needs to available services … Existing national treasures would also make good candidates for common servers. With its ability to carry high-quality color images and video, for example, the NII could make the paintings of the National Gallery and the athletic achievements of the Olympic Games available to schools and homes. Anticipating the inevitable linking of the world’s NIIs, we might someday bring into our homes the Louvre, the Hermitage and the Athens Archaeological Museum, with the ability to tailor the offerings of these grand institutions to our personal needs and interests.”
Biography:Michael Dertouzos was director of the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science and the author of “The Unfinished Revolution.” He led a project intended to make computers adapt to people. He outlined a comprehensive proposal for a national information “infrastructure” in a 1991 article for Technology Review. (Research Scientist/Illuminator.)
