Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

The position of most network vendors will be that of a “global village cobbler,” forced into building many different kinds of networks technologies to service clients needs … Vendors have a tough road ahead … “Heterogeneity is here to stay.” And it won’t just be vendors that have to cope.

Predictor: Benhamou, Eric

Prediction, in context:

A 1993 article carried by Computer Dealer News carries an account covering the conference NetCon ’93, held in Toronto. Included is coverage of a keynote speech by 3Com CEO Eric Benhamou: ”Benhamou offered a down-to-earth approach, conceding that networks will continue to grow rather than shrink. Vendors will have to build on older technology, conscious of the fact that users want to maintain their investments. The position of most network vendors will be that of a ‘global village cobbler,’ forced into building many different kinds of networks technologies to service clients needs. As a jack of all trades, vendors have a tough road ahead, Benhamou said. ‘Heterogeneity is here to stay.’ And it won’t just be vendors that have to cope.”

Biography:

Eric Benhamou chaired the American Electronics Association’s National Information Infrastructure Task Force from 1993-1995, representing 3,000 member companies in the fastest growing segments of the high-technology industry. He later became chairman of the 3Com Corporation, a world leader in networking technologies. (Technology Developer/Administrator.)
