One of the great things about the Web is that small companies, big companies – everyone will have a profile on the Web, and they will have lots of ways to make money at it.
In time, high-tech snooping and databanking could make earlier-generation activities seem naively old-fashioned, as innocent as child’s play. When that occurs, our failure to legislate controls over surveillance equipment as they evolved – already a problem today – could overwhelm us, as could our failure to prescribe adequate civil and criminal penalties for abuses of individual privacy committed by government agencies and U.S. corporations.
We have always had some gaps in access to information. What one hopes is that Internet access will be widely available, and that much of its information will be provided at no additional cost. There will always be premium services, but I don’t think it is a foregone conclusion that we will end up with the apocalyptic haves/have-nots gap.
I think technology costs are dropping fast enough that [mobile access to the Internet] isn’t out of the question in 10 to 15 years, maybe sooner.
We need to go beyond literacy and computer literacy to “information literacy” … How can we take literacy to the next level so we can use it?
We plainly need to provide better tools for securing Internet access. This would allow companies and individual subscribers to protect their internal resources while allowing them to reach out and be visible on the global Internet.

There are currently two models by which the information highway will reach homes – either by telephone line or cable television line … We need a model that goes beyond these two to one with different-size pipes and whatever size platform we decide to use.
We’re trying internally to cut down on the amount of paper that we use … With the hypertext kind of paradigm that you see on the Web, you can imagine putting all of your corporate documentation on there – even things like design files for machines.
