A university student living in a remote area can take an entire degree over the Internet without ever having set foot at SFU or any other campus.
Predictor: Harasim, Linda
Prediction, in context:In a 1995 article in the Vancouver (B.C.) Sun, reporter Kevin Griffin writes of an interview with Linda Harasim regarding online distance education:”Called the TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence, the SFU-based network will link about 150 researchers in education, the social sciences, computer science and engineering at 28 universities across the country. One goal of the research team will be to develop computer software so a university student living in a remote area can take an entire degree over the Internet without ever having set foot at SFU or any other campus. Linda Harasim, an SFU communications professor and one of the network leaders along with Tom Calvert of the university’s Centre for Systems Science, said the network is taking on the task of looking at how education will be delivered in the 21st century. The research team, she said, will be getting down to the basics of what it really means to have classrooms without walls. ‘It’s a huge problem that’s facing every country,’ Harasim said. ‘Canada is the first country, on a national basis, to take that step to prepare for the future.'”
Biography:Linda Harasim, a professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, was the Project Leader of Virtual-U, one of the first multimedia network systems customized for course delivery and enhancement. She spoke at conferences and wrote or co-wrote many articles and books on online education, including “Learning Networks: a Field Guide to Teaching and Learning Online” (MIT Press, 1995).
