Nutshell: 2015 - Networks are exposed to an insidious virus that knocks out all essential functions. Civilization is reduced to small bands of individuals who are strong and viscious enough to survive.

Vision:

Information technologies advance to the point where society is dependent on them for everything from finance management to buying groceries to significant human interaction. A computer virus is released that is so insidious that it shuts down the grid. Scientists are unable to reinitiate the system in time to avoid mass hysteria from lack of local food stores. The American civilization is reduced to bands of those who are strong and viscious enough to survive.
