Greek Life Policies - Scholarship Statement

We, the Greek community of Elon, reaffirm the ideals set forth by the founding members of our individual organizations. Our commitment, to ourselves and each other, is to be leaders both inside and outside the classroom. We strive to instill these qualities within our Pledges/Associates/Aspirants/New Members by dedicating ourselves to the advancement of academic scholarship and personal development and making these goals a priority for our Pledges/Associates/Aspirants/New Members (PAANM).

Accountability and Expectations

Planning Stage:
Each chapter will develop and submit a Scholarship Program for each PAANM group. This plan will be developed by the chapter to support the academic success of each PAANM and submitted to the Office of Greek Life with the overall PAANM Program.

Implementing Stage:
The following are recommended as integral components of a successful Scholarship Program:

Study Program: Each chapter should develop its own type of study program and specific time requirements for their PAANM classes. Ideas for consideration include structured study halls, honor study systems, study buddies, Big Brother/Big Sister study reports, etc.

Individual Academic Enrichment Plan: Each chapter should develop a process by which each PAANM will develop a personal Academic Success Plan. The PAANM would then share this with his/her Big Brother/Sister, New Member/Pledge Educator or Scholarship Chair. This may include study goals, tutoring needs, GPA goals, advising needs, skill development needs, etc.

Academic Update: Regularly have each PAANM report to his/her PAANM group, Big Brother/Sister, chapter officer, etc. on grades, study plans, projects, etc. One idea would be to have this as a regular part of each PAANM meeting so they could support and challenge each other.

Rewards/Incentives: Rewards or incentives are a great tool for recognizing positive performance. Some ideas are 1) Group Based Rewards - if the entire group attends all classes, etc. 2) Grade Based Rewards - the group or individuals may be rewarded for "Bs or Better" on tests or projects, and 3) Improvement Rewards - PAANMs whose grades improve during a class may earn reduced dues, chapter paraphernalia or chapter recognition.

Scholarship Program: Each chapter may want to develop a Scholarship to be created and funded by actives and alums for current members. The chapter determines the requirements, scholarship amount, selection panel, etc.

Reflection and Assessment Stage:
Each Unifying Council will support its respective groups throughout the PAANM education process. Each council will also support the individual chapters and the Greek program by conducting a forum at the conclusion of each education period. The forum will allow each chapter to report on its Scholarship Program and its successes and challenges.

Best Practices:
To assist with our commitment to PAANM Scholarship, we propose the development of a "Best Practices" Resource Manual. The manual will have three different sections. Section One will include programs taken from each chapter’s national Academic Achievement/Scholarship Manual. Section Two will include any "Best Practices" that we learn about from other schools or leadership conferences. Section Three will be an Elon-specific "Speakers Bureau" to include relative topics and faculty, staff and administrators willing to present on them.
