Your health is a shared responsibility with the Student Health Services staff. You are encouraged to take an active role in managing your health. If you do not feel that your concerns are being addressed or that your questions are being answered, you are encouraged to tell your provider. Elon University Student Health Services staff seeks to establish a climate that diminishes anxiety and encourages and embraces honest, open communication. Likewise, you have an obligation to be an informed and responsible patient of Elon University Student Health Services.

You have a right to:

  • Quality care with proper evaluation and treatment, without regard to race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability or illness;
  • Be treated with respect, dignity and consideration of your values and beliefs influencing your perception of illness and care;
  • Privacy during medical care and confidentiality of communications and records pertaining to your care;
  • Have an appointment with the provider of your choice (when possible);
  • Know who is responsible for providing your care and to request a different provider;
  • Be an active participant in decisions regarding your care;
  • Receive complete and understandable information about your illness and treatment, including consequences for not following treatment;
  • Refuse recommendations for treatment to the extent permitted by law;
  • Access information in your medical record;
  • Approve or refuse the release of information from your medical record except when release is required or allowed by law;
  • Receive an explanation of all charges incurred;
  • Voice concerns without fear of reprisals or discrimination.

You have a responsibility to:

  • Be an active participant in decisions regarding your care;
  • Provide, to the best of your ability, accurate and complete information about health history and health status;
  • Report any changes in your health status to the medical staff providing your care;
  • Ask questions when something is not clear;
  • Follow your health care provider’s instructions or discuss any concerns you may have with your treatment plan;
  • Accept responsibility for consequences that may occur if you refuse treatment or do not follow your treatment plan;
  • Keep appointments or cancel in a timely manner;
  • Respect the rights and property of other patients;
  • Voice concerns without fear of reprisals or discrimination
