As students prepare to start spring term this Thursday, Jon Dooley, vice president for Student Life, recommends strategies for helping them thrive academically and personally.
As students prepare to start spring term this Thursday, here are the ‘Phoenix Five’ tips for thriving academically and personally this spring.
Set Clear Goals
Start the spring off right with clear, actionable goals for both personal and academic success. Goals give you direction, help maintain focus and provide a sense of purpose throughout the semester. Regularly review them and adjust as needed to stay motivated and on track.
Build a Support System
A strong support network of friends, mentors, advisors and coaches provides emotional stability, guidance and encouragement during challenging times. Being part of a community can provide emotional support, reduce stress and enhance your college experience. Still looking to make connections? Establish Healthy Routines
Physical and mental health are crucial for sustained success. Focusing, staying motivated or managing stress effectively is challenging without proper self-care. Most college students would benefit greatly from creating routines that include regular exercise, balanced meals, meditation and mindfulness, and sufficient sleep.
Monitor Your Digital Habits
Limit time spent on social media or non-academic screen use. Track your usage to see how you’re spending your time and create boundaries to stay focused and maintain a healthy balance between online and in-person activities. Use tools like planners and digital calendars to balance academics, work, co-curricular involvement, wellness and relaxation.
Utilize Campus Resources
Leveraging academic support services like tutoring, learning assistance, the library, and the writing center, connecting with faculty during office hours, and taking full advantage of HealthEU resources can go a long way toward your academic and personal success. These resources are designed to support you, so don’t hesitate to seek help early.
